Terro and other ant traps can fail on Florida ants when the species does not prefer the bait, the station is away from the active trail, competing food is available, or disturbance causes budding. A bait station can be a tool, but identification, placement and colony behavior decide whether it solves the problem.

Terro and other liquid ant traps can be useful tools, but a station cannot make an unidentified Florida ant behave predictably. Ghost ants may reject a bait, find an easier food source, use a different trail or split after disturbance. When the station fails, the useful question is which part of the colony plan is missing.

A product is not a species plan

Ants called sugar ants are not one species. Ghost ants have a dark front and pale rear, and their colonies may use wall gaps, plants, mulch and several nearby nest sites. Bait acceptance and trail behavior can change with the species and the colony's current needs.

Reason 1: the ant rejects the bait

Workers walking around a station do not prove they are feeding. Food preference can vary, and a sweet liquid that attracts one ant may be ignored by another. Observe the workers instead of assuming the label on the station answers the identification.

Reason 2: the station is off-route

Ants are more likely to encounter bait on a documented trail near a cabinet, sink, baseboard or utility opening. A station placed in the middle of a clean room may be convenient but invisible to the colony.

Reason 3: competing food wins

Grease, sugar, pet food, damp sponges, plant pots and condensation can be more attractive than the station. Ordinary cleaning and drying help clarify the choice, but they do not remove a colony inside a wall.

Reason 4: disturbance changes the colony

Spray or repeated disturbance can cause budding in some small household ants. The original trail becomes quiet while new trails appear around a bathroom, plant or neighboring cabinet. What to do before adding more

Stop spraying, photograph the ant and trace the trail. Note whether the body is two-toned, where the workers disappear and whether activity changes after rain. Protect food and dry obvious moisture, then choose a method based on the species, route and nest options. A station can be part of that plan, but it is not the plan by itself.
